? So here I am, editing a Linux forum with an Asus Eee, 1GB RAM, 60GB SSD, and a 16GB SD-card that contains my 250GB media collection. It works great for me; fast, light, and ridiculously cheap. However, I have discovered something really cool about this tablet: it has a hardware button that pops up a standard utility that allows me to mount flash storage devices, delete apps, and perform other basic system operations. Anyway, I got to thinking: how does Asus make the FlashTool software for it, how is it made for this specific tablet, and what hardware is involved? In other words, why is the Asus FlashTool so special, when similar utilities work on other operating systems (like Windows)? First of all, the hardware button to start the FlashTool. It’s a small silver button on the right side of the tablet. The FlashTool software can be invoked by holding this button, as shown below. The ASUS FlashTool looks like this. Notice the “Ask me for root” button. To start, the software gives you the chance to enable root access to the system. This is a good thing, because without root, you can’t install apps that need root access. In order to use the root privilege, you have to press the “Ask me for root” button on the FlashTool’s tool bar. After you enter root password, the tool will ask you to delete some apps. You don’t want to delete these apps, so you press the “No, keep them” button. After you confirm that you want to delete some apps, it will show you a list of apps. You can pick and choose which apps you want to delete. So why does this work in the first place? Why can we use this utility on a non-Linux tablet to read/write to a flash storage device?
